Janet Frost 1931 – 2024

It was sad to hear that Janet Frost had passed away on the 23rd September. Janet, a well known member of the community, was very involved in village life. She will be remembered for the work that she did, over the years, gathering historical information relating to Highnam and the surrounding areas. She gave many talks on the subject and put together the book, ‘Highnam, A History and Guide’ which covers the history of Highnam and the local area from Roman times to the present day.

Janet was born in Sheffield in 1931 and grew up there as a child. Her family decided in the early part of World War 2 that Janet, along with her brother and two sisters, should be evacuated via Glasgow to South Africa. They were on board the ship but their trip was cancelled when a ship carrying evacuee children to Canada was torpedoed and all passengers, including children, were lost. They returned and spent the rest of the war in Sheffield. Janet met Tom, a local architect, and went on to marry in the early 50s.

Tom got a job in Gloucester and moved from Sheffield. Not long after their move to Gloucester they rented a property in Highnam. In 1954 they bought a plot of land on Maidenhall and built their bungalow. Their children, Christopher, Stephen, Penny and William (Bill),  were born in Highnam and went to Highnam school.

Janet was very much part of the community and will be remembered by most of Highnam’s residents. In later years her she had mobility issues but still managed to get down to the Post Office using her walker. She was still managing this just two weeks before she passed.

She made all of her material available in the early days of Highnam Heritage and later passed all of that material onto Highnam Heritage for further reference and to archive.

She will be sadly missed.
