We are pleased to welcome back Toby Thacker for a talk on the history of Over Isolation Hospital.
Over Isolation Hospital was opened in April 1903. The need for this facility was prompted by an outbreak of Smallpox in Gloucester City in 1895. Over’s location was ideal and Vineyard Hill was purchsed by the Corporation despite some local opposition.
Over’s role as an isolation hospital continued until after the second World War when the main role of the hospital changed to caring for the elderly. In it’s latter days, Over operated as a day facility but, due to changes in the policies for care in the community, Over was no longer required and closed in October 1992.
